Plastics Essay From the mid-1980s onwards, plastic bags became common for carrying daily groceries from the store to vehicles and homes throughout the developed world. As plastic bags increasingly replaced paper bags, and as other plastic materials and products replaced glass, metal, stone, timber and other materials, a packaging materials war erupted, with plastic shopping bags at the center of highly publicized disputes. Although few peer-reviewed studies or government surveys have provided estimates for global plastic bag use, environmental activists estimate that between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used each year worldwide. Plastic has replaced the traditional material (paper/cloth etc) as packing and carry bags because of cost and convenience which is possibly a wrong choice of material for such use. Even though plastic bags can preserve food and can be used for growing vegetables in a controlled environment, their method of disposal has creates unprecedented pollution problem. Plastic has many more uses other than Plastic Bags and Packing material. It is used for manufacturing of protective covers and parts for many machines, which should be the preferred utility for plastic. More than a 100 million tones of plastic is produced world-wide each year. Though plastics have opened the way for a plethora of new inventions and devices it has also ended up clogging the drains and becoming a health hazard. Many countries, including India, are trying to increase the amount of plastic that is recycled. But commercial interests create hindrance for effective legislation to remove plastics from goods where they can threaten public health. Also there is a clear trend of shipping off the plastic waste of developed countries to under develop and developing countries. India imported 7,841. 8 metric tonnes of plastic waste from the US in the first half of 1994. India is the fourth highest Asian importer of plastic waste behind Hong Kong, Philippines,Indonesia. Environmental pollution caused by routinely used polythene packaging materials; it would be prudent, for the present, to use eco-friendly paper packaging. The manufacturers of plastic packaging like soft drink bottles/mineral water bottles etc must come forward and develop appropriate methods of disposal/own responsibility for disposal. Plastic bags were found to constitute a significant portion of the floating marine debris in the waters around southern Chile in a study conducted between 2002 and 2005. If washed out to sea, plastic bags can be carried long distances by ocean currents, and can strangle marine animals or, if ingested, cause them to starve to death. [8] Numerous deaths among animals such as sea turtles and dolphins have been attributed to the ingestion of plastic marine litter, which includes plastic bags. Littering is often a serious problem in developing countries, where trash collection infrastructure is less developed than in wealthier nations. The relatively limited adoption of modern biodegradable plastic bags means that many older landfills are filled with large, persistent deposits of non-degrading bags. It is, however, possible that in the future these deposits could be mined and reprocessed to replace dwindling raw material resources. In recent times due to widespread awareness drive by NGOS and government and to lesser extent by educational institutions has resulted in increasing the consciousness among few shopkeepers they have shifted back to the old system of wrapping up goods in paper bags or newspapers, Some people are slowly getting habituated to going to the market with cloth bags. Besides a few NGOs, even school students have come forward to take up a promotion campaign for the use of paper or cloth bags. Each year, as industry produces more and more nonessential products individually and excessively packaged, we throw away more and more trash. To a large extent, our garbage problem is a result of a corporate ethic that puts profits before people and the environment. Industry is pushing disposability because it pays. Plastic razors can only be used a few times before disposal, then more must be bought, making the plastic and razor industries rich and happy. Appliances designed to become obsolete guarantee youll have to buy new ones next year. Over 84 percent (by weight) of municipal solid waste could be reused, recycled or composted instead of being buried or burned. An exception is plastic, which comprises about 7 percent by weight or 20 percent by volume of municipal solid waste. Due to technical and financial limitations, less than ten percent of plastic is currently recycled. Furthermore, plastic recycling only defers the plastic disposal problem, since most plastic items can only be manufactured from virgin plastic. Recycled polystyrene foam (also known by the brand name Styrofoam) can be used to build marine docks but not to make a new polystyrene foam cup. New plastic will have to be produced from non-renewable oil stocks to make those cups, and eventually all the plastic will have to be disposed of. Last February 21, 2011, the province of Albay, spearheaded by Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda became the first in the Bicol region to ban the use of plastic bags. Provincial Ordinance No. 011 – 3, which is also known as the â€Å"Anti – Plastic† Ordinance of the Province of Albay, prohibits the use of plastic bags on dry goods and regulating the use on wet goods and prohibiting the use of Styrofoam and other synthetic materials harmful to the environment. The ordinance, signed into law by the governor and lauded by the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan is expected to eradicate the use of plastics bag by any means. As cited in Section 2 of the ordinance, the law is for the compliance of all business establishments, groceries, department stores, supermarkets, chain retailers and sari-sari stores in the province. Likewise, utilization of alternative packaging materials such as woven native bags (bayong), reusable cloth, shopping bags (katsa), paper bags and other similar materials is encouraged. It is also a known fact that many of those plastic bags that shop owners used to pack their merchandise often ended up in streets. The hazards plastic pose for the province are numerous. Albay being a favorite spot of natural disasters is at risk with the threats of excessive use of plastic products. Also, the province gets littered by plastic bag garbage presenting an ugly and unhygienic seen. The soil fertility deteriorates as plastic bags form part of manure remains on the soil for years. This new ordinance should be taken sincerely because this not only speaks for the lives at stake but for the environment of the next generations as well. Large food chains like McDonald’s, Jollibee and others should start to ban Styrofoam packages among their products. Large supermarkets should take the initiatives and act upon the given law and use alternatives to pack the purchase of their customers. They should also convince customers to bring their own reusable bags when they go shopping. Educational programs anchored to the ordinance should also be created to be able to grasp the students’ awareness about this law. They should be educated as early as in primary years that they may become fully aware of it. Massive campaigns like door-to-door information drive, barangay seminars and other promotions using quad media will be helpful in the realization of the law. Furthermore, environmental awareness of each individual should be encouraged as well.

The First Amendment: Free of Expression In 1787 our forefathers ratified the constitution of the United States of America, which contains the most important document to any American citizen, the Bill of Rights. The first amendment of the Bill of Rights states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the establishment thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech; or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. these freedoms (commonly called the freedom of expression) are of the most important rights in a truly democratic society. Without them there would be no new ideas; we would all conform under totalitarian rule for fear of punishment. However, when I, a common student at West Rowan High School try to express my feelings on "the state of the Bill of Rights in schools today" by making a computer presentation in multimedia class, my work is declared "bad" and my teacher and assistant principal do one of the most un-American things imaginable: they censored it. I had to re-make the presentation and lighten the harsh tone, and also erase the anarchy symbol from it. The teacher said that she was worried about me for reasons such as my feelings on the freedom of religion were almost satanic, because I said teachers should not be able to publicly practice religion in schools because it will encourage students to become a part of that religion. The presentation was neither slanderous nor obscene, but it did criticize teachers and administrators calling them "fascist dictators". At first I was angry at the school because I could wear clothing that was obscene or contained liquor advertisements, now they have completely taken away my freedom of speech. This of course proved my argument that teachers and administrators are totalitarians. As one journalist put it, "If Freedom of expression becomes merely an empty slogan in the minds of enough children, it will be dead by the time we are adults." I soon began reading more and more about the freedom of speech in schools and every time a subject as such came up the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the student declaring the action unconstitutional under the first amendment. As I was reading Nat Hentoff's book The First Freedom I came across a story in which a student wrote a newspaper article criticizing the school administration, soon after he ran for student government and was taken off the ballot for his critique. Enter If You Must A testament of cinematic genius, a daring and psychedelic composition, an adventure through reality and the afterlife: Enter the Void is unlike any movie one has seen or probably will see in the future. Written and directed by the Frenchman Gaspar Noe, Enter the Void is a complex film that constantly experiments with the director’s unique visual style. Enter the Void follows the tragic story of a young American drug dealer, Oscar, as he struggles to survive in the neon-lit and chaotic streets of Tokyo. Early in the film, Oscar is shot and killed in a drug bust gone wrong.The rest of the film is captured from the perspective of Oscar’s spirit, as he revisits important moments of his past and watches over his loved ones. Enter the Void challenges all theories about life and death, explores the world of drugs and sex, and reaffirms the true value of a brother and sister relationship. However, what makes Enter the Void especially distinct is that the camer a only shoots through the first-person perspective of Oscar, as we watch everything through his eyes. Noe’s commitment to presenting the whole film through Oscar’s perspective dates back to films such as Robert Montgomery’s Lady in the Lake.Noe is able to effectively bring the audience into Oscar’s conscience with this camera technique, and the detail makes the film all a more fascinating experience. Throughout the film, Noe consciously alters the POV-style of the camera to represent different stages of the character’s life. When Oscar is alive, the camera is strictly through his viewpoint, and we are reminded he is alive from his eyes blinking on the screen. This POV-style allows us to get to know Oscar on a very personal level, as his every action and thoughts are always seen by the audience from a perspective they are used to seeing their own life from.When Oscar dies, Noe changes the camera to an over-the-shoulder shot, and all we can see is th e back of Oscar’s head. This POV-style allows the audience to revisit moments of Oscar’s past from a different perspective, one that is uninviting, but it also allows the audience to finally be able to care for a character who they can see visibly. Eventually, Noe removes Oscar’s silhouette from view, and the camera hovers like a ghost over Tokyo in a fantastic out-of-body visual display. The swooping and soaring camerawork perfectly transcribes the feeling of Oscar’s spirit flying through the luorescent lights and towering skyscrapers on the Tokyo skyline. There is a dreamlike quality to this camera view, and Noe masterfully mesmerizes the audience with a psychedelic display of colors, lights, and movement. The different POV-styles of the camera are definitely an important tool that constantly reminds the audience what stage they are following Oscar in: Life, death, or in his memories. Without a doubt, Enter the Void courageously experiments with camera perspective, and Noe is able to create an exciting visual experience for the audience, while telling his story in a non-traditional manner.Enter the Void is not only remarkable for its daring first-person perspective camera work, but Gaspar Noe’s brilliant use of computer-generated imagery allows him to visually synthesize the sex, drugs, and violence of this film, into a complex masterpiece. Noe is able to create a visual beauty and sense of spirituality through the help of computer-generated imagery, even allowing the audience to share Oscar’s experience hallucinating after smoking DMT. Noe experimented with hallucinogens in his youth, and his experiences had a profound influence on the visuals in Enter the Void.He would often reference paintings, photographs, music videos, and other films in order to describe his psychedelic experiences to his design team. As Oscar starts his trip, the screen transforms into a collage of brightly lit shapes and colors. The elaborate designs and images incorporate the audience into Oscar’s character, a lost and troubled youth, and we experience his thoughts and viewpoint first hand. Noe experiments with a new language of film, as the various textures and morphing images he uses are essential in achieving a 3D feeling without any glasses.Noe constantly breaks from the typical conventions of film, as he simultaneously combines experimental visuals with obscure POV-styles. When filming the camera shots hovering over Tokyo, Noe combined studio scenes, helicopter shots, and computer-generated imagery into one so the audience could not tell them apart. The dreamlike world of Enter the Void was achieved by accentuating the neon lights, reflections, and dark areas of Tokyo. Noe even experimented with motion blur, chromatic aberration, and focus effects to create the mysterious flickers that add to Tokyo’s sleazy psychedelic environment at night.Noe’s visuals and unique storytelling methods definite ly show similarities to his favorite film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The light corridor scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey clearly influenced Gaspar Noe, as Noe re-creates the same feelings of amazement and mystery that come from special effects, camera movement, and lighting. Noe’s work has also been compared to Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, as they both have created experimental works that distort the formal elements of film, often in a frustrating, cruel, and provocative way.Enter the Void is effectively able to draw the audience into the film through personal relationships with the characters, but it is the film’s fascinating use of visuals and CGI that makes it hold meaning with the audience on a spiritually mesmerizing level. Overall, Enter the Void is a phenomenal work that recognizes the experimental side of film, as it combines an unconventional plot, daring POV-styles, and outstanding computer-generated imagery.Gaspar Noe masterfully combines digital effects wi th unique cinematic techniques, and as a result Enter the Void is a mind-altering experience that constantly challenges our theories on life, death, and the spiritual. Noe breaks away from the usual conventions of film, and this gives him the freedom to embrace his creativity, and follow his true passions. Enter the Void will surely take one on a captivating journey through hell and back, but more importantly it will open one’s eyes to how a director can expand the possibilities of film.
